ALEX PAYAN, Co-Founder

Hi, I am Alex P. a queer xican@ born and raised in Southern California, been calling Seattle home for over 10 years now. I graduated from the Cortiva Institute in the summer of 2011. I have recently started my journey into Curanderismo  (traditional Mexican healing). I am very excited to incorporate the medicine of my ancestors into my style of bodywork.
My therapeutic focus is in providing massage as a healing element in my communities (q/t*poc). My style has developed over the years into a hybrid of wellness and treatment. I like to work on body structure and postural issues caused by everyday work and life. In general I would say working on the neck both anterior and posterior (front & back) could be my forte. Yes, I can help with that tension that you carry in your shoulders I can also help with the chronic low back issues.

As far as techniques I mix aspects of structural integration with sports massage assistive stretching, depth massage and Swedish. I recently started to add Ventosas (traditional Mexican cupping) and bits of Mayan abdominal massage into my sessions. Other styles I use are floor massage (think Thai massage meets physical therapy meets assistive yoga), barefoot massage (I jump on the table and stand on folks, it’s slow and repetitive; think cats making pizza). I also work with suction cupping and hot stones and will be introducing Limpias  (traditional Mexican spiritual/energetic cleansing).
Outside of massage, I like to dabble in herbalism, grow food and herbs in my garden, and build things out of up-cycled materials. I turn discarded things I find in alleys and on the side of the road into functional things or trash art.
Well-educated with the ability to tailor a session to fit the client’s needs. Whether it’s to knock out stress, or alter posture to bring balance back to the body, I am here to help facilitate your goals.

RIVERS and TIDES:
Healing is living is loving is healing is living is loving is healing.  This phrase developed during and lifted me through some intense periods of healing in my own life.  I believe we are all in a state of healing, whether from a specific injury or experience or more subtle layers of growth unfolding within.  I bring reverence for the magic in the mundane and believe that we can find healing spaces within ourselves in our daily lives.  I come to my bodywork practice with a sense of curiosity, humility and patience. My practice centers queer and trans BIPOC folx and I am grounded in our individual and collective wholeness. I love listening to my clients and their bodies and seeing where each session takes us. I hold space and listen with my heart, mind and hands and hope to support my clients to do the same.

Some personal fun facts: I love being outside, growing food and flowers and finding beauty in my days.  I take photos of the sky and reflections in the water, savor good food and love to laugh with my head thrown back and mouth open wide. If I were a boat, I’d be a tugboat or a Washington State ferry.  I love making things with my hands, even though I don’t like measuring tapes or straight edges.  I can incorporate my dog’s name into just about any song. Non-verbal communication is my favorite kind of communication and for my next career, I’d love to train/work with therapy animals.

Mariko was first introduced to Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine as a patient, but soon grew to appreciate how the system of medicine viewed the body as a dynamic whole and tailored treatment to the individual.  Acupuncture in particular taps into the body’s ability to self-heal and "up-regulate", which she found to be a very empowering view of health. She received her Master's from SIEAM (previously SIOM), where she trained in acupuncture, herbs, qi gong (movement therapy), tuina (therapeutic massage), and the many other components of East Asian Medicine. While she treats a wide variety of conditions, she is particularly interested in tuina massage, pregnancy & postpartum support, and mental health. A cornerstone of her practice is a commitment to increase access to Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine, especially in communities of color and LGBTQ+ communities. She holds that culturally-sensitive, considerate care should be every person's due, and so strives to equip herself with the skills to meet each patient with compassion and without judgement. East Asian Medicine is a system of medicine that is safe, practical, and effective, and as such should be available to all.

Accepted Insurance: Mariko is happy to bill most PPO insurance plans. In addition, she is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Lifewise, Premera, Humana, Kaiser Access PPO, Regence, and Uniform Health. She is also a registered provider for TriWest's Veterans Choice Program. To schedule an appointment or a free consult:
